The Zemel Choir, under the musical direction of Benjamin Wolf, is proud of its international reputation as one of the world’s finest mixed voice Jewish choirs. Established by Dudley Cohen, Zemel's wide ranging repertoire compiled over the fifty five years of the choir’s existence embraces all the traditional Jewish cultures, Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Yiddish and Israeli. The repertoire includes works by both Jewish and non-Jewish composers – both liturgical and secular, light and serious. We have performed works spanning ten centuries of Jewish music, from the plainchant of Ovadiah the monk to new works commissioned by the choir and other living composers. We are also proud to perform in a mixture of languages, particularly Hebrew, Ladino and Yiddish, as well as English. In recent years we have performed works by well known European composers of Jewish music such as Rossi, Lewandowski and Sulzer, British composers such as Mombach and Alman, Israeli composers such as Ben Haim, Gil Aldema and Yehezkel Braun, and American composers including Copland, Bernstein, Gershwin and Weill. The Zemel choir regularly perform in major venues throughout the U.K. and overseas.
